The City of Calabasas will proudly host the community’s annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Calabasas High School on Monday, July 4, 2011. Gates open at 5:00p.m. and the fireworks show begins at 9:00p.m. The family-oriented, fun-filled event will feature live music from Stone Soul featuring the best of 1960s Soul & Motown classics, a free family fun zone with a balloon artist, rides, crafts, games and the grand fireworks display!

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are be available City Hall (100 Civic Center Way) until July 1 and at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center (23400 Park Sorrento) and Juan Bautista De Anza Park (3701 Lost Hills Road) until close of business on July 4. The $11 admission price includes parking, entertainment and all activities.  Children under 2 years of age are admitted free! Tickets will be available until sold out or until 6:00p.m. from the Tennis & Swim Center. 

Handicap parking and a Shuttle for elderly & disabled (plus one attendant) will be available.  Delicious food and beverages will be offered for sale at the site including barbequed meats, sausages, roasted corn, kettle corn, snow cones and more.  Please note that the Fireworks Spectacular is an alcohol and tobacco free zone. No bottles, pets or umbrellas are permitted.

Before the Fireworks Spectacular, the City will feature a day full of free events for the community starting with the 34th annual Lakeside Fun Run, sponsored in part by the Calabasas Park Homeowners Association, which will take place along Calabasas Lake behind the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center beginning at 7:45a.m.  Registration for the Fun Run is $15 for adults and $12 for children before July 1.  After the Fun Run, a pet show will be held at 11:00a.m. at the greenbelt adjacent to the Tennis & Swim Center featuring pet adoptions and pet contests in several categories.  A Summer Splash Party, featuring games, swimming, free use of tennis courts, a barbeque, music and dancing will take place at the Tennis & Swim Center from 11:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. 

Beginning July 1, 2011, shoppers will no longer receive disposable plastic bags while shopping at Calabasas grocery stores and are encouraged to use reusable shopping bags whenever possible.  Under a new law passed by the City Council in February 2011 (Ordinance No. 2011-282), Calabasas is prohibiting disposable plastic shopping bags in two stages. 

The City will be giving away free, reusable bags to shoppers on Friday, July 1 at the five Calabasas stores who are part of the first stage in the ban.   From 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. on Friday July 1, elected officials, staff and volunteers will be distributing bags at Gelson’s (22277 Mulholland Highway in Calabasas), Ralphs (in the Commons at Calabasas) and Rite Aid (also in the Commons at Calabasas).  From 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m., bags will be distributed at Albertsons (26521 Agoura Road in Calabasas) and at Maddy’s Market (26767 Agoura Road in Calabasas). 

Under the terms of the new law, stores will have reusable bags available for sale and will also offer recyclable paper bags for 10 cents each in lieu of customers bringing their reusable bags or simply carrying items purchased without a bag.  The fees collected from bag sales will only go towards helping stores comply with the new law. Lower income residents who participate in the California Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children program will receive either reusable bags or recyclable paper bags for free.   Small plastic bags will still be available in stores for fruits and vegetables.  

Smaller drug stores, convenience food stores, smaller retail stores and grocers must stop offering disposable plastic bags by January 1, 2012. 

The Calabasas ordinance is modeled after one passed last November by Los Angeles County and backed by a comprehensive Environmental Impact Report conducted by the County.  Calabasas now joins the growing ranks of municipalities encouraging residents to bring reusable bags when shopping.  For more information about reusable bags and this ordinance, please visit http://www.cityofcalabasas.com/plastic-bag-ban.html. 

The City of Calabasas has released revised schedules for 2011 summertime public transportation services.  Line 1 continues unchanged and lines 2 through 8 began summer service on June 21, 2011.  Lines 2 and 3 serve the west side of Calabasas and provide service for students needing to attend Calabasas High School and A. C. Stelle Middle School, respectively.  Line 4 and Line 5 serve the east side of Calabasas and provide looping service to Calabasas High School. Line 6, Line 7 and Line 8 serve the east side of the City and provide service to A. C. Stelle.   

Please note that this summer, riders must show either the blue 2011 annual pass, or use the green transit tickets to ride the shuttle service.  Failure to do so will result in refusal of service. Please note that Line 1 and the Calabasas Trolley do not require riders to show the summer transit pass.   Please contact Calabasas Public Transportation Customer Service at (888) 287-7929 with any questions. 

2011 SPRING/SUMMER RECREATION BROCHURE

The 2011 Calabasas Spring/Summer Winter Recreation brochure has been mailed to all Calabasas residents.  The brochure features detailed information about adult and youth classes, senior citizen programs, community news and information, sports activities and much more.  Please look for Enrichment classes and other after school programs in the Recreation Brochure.  The 2011 Spring/Summer Calabasas Recreation Brochure is also available online and additional paper copies are available at City Hall, the Agoura/Calabasas Community Center and the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center.   Classes run until September 2011 so make sure to register early!  For more information about Calabasas recreation opportunities or for help with class registration, please call the Recreation department at (818) 880-6461.

“Plan ahead, avoid the area, or stay home.”  That’s the message public safety officials are sending to the public in anticipation of a planned 10-mile, 53-hour closure of the I-405 freeway between the U.S. 101 and I-10 on the weekend of July 16-17, 2011 for planned demolition work on the Mulholland Bridge as part of a major I-405 improvement project.

On Friday, July 15, ramps to the northbound I-405 between U.S. 101 and the I-10 and southbound I-405 between U.S. 101 and Getty Center Drive will begin to be shut down as early as 7:00p.m., and closure of freeway lanes will begin at 10 p.m. to ensure full freeway closure by midnight. The closure will continue until 5:00a.m. on Monday morning, July 18. Ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6:00a.m. During this closure, the Mulholland Bridge, I-405 freeway and access ramps will be closed. 

The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Metro and Caltrans are informing the public in advance that if they do not have a critical need to be in or near the vicinity of the closure, they are being asked to avoid the area.

Motorists who must travel through the Los Angeles metropolitan area are advised to use alternate freeways within the region. In addition, public transportation options are available such as the Metro Rail service within L.A. County and Metrolink servicing the five-county Southern California region. Additional alternate route information will be made available on the project web site at www.metro.net/405.

The City of Calabasas Planning Division invites residents to take part in a monthly game to guess the historic Calabasas landmark depicted as the Calabasas Historic Place of the Month.  Each month, a new photo will be posted on the Calabasas website depicting just a small portion of the Historic Place of the Month.  Using only the image given and their knowledge of the City, residents are encouraged to submit their guesses via email.  At the end of the month, a detailed answer will be posted online detailing what is shown in the image and the historical importance of the location.  Each month, another new image will be posted which highlights the diverse and largely unknown history of the Calabasas area.

The City of Calabasas organizes two free monthly electronic waste collection events. On  the first Saturday of each month (Saturday, July 2, 2011), an electronic waste collection will take place at the Albertson’s parking lot, 26521 Agoura Road (at Las Virgenes Road) in Calabasas from 10:00a.m to 3:00p.m.  A second monthly electronic waste event will take place on the 3rd Saturday of the month, July 16, 2011, in the Vons Shopping Center parking lot at 23381 Mulholland Drive in Woodland Hills from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Acceptable items include but are not limited to CD players, laptops and personal computers, microwave ovens, printers, radios, stereos, telephones, and VCR’s.  For more information, please contact the City of Calabasas Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator at (818) 224-1600.

The Calabasas Library is hosting a free movie discussion group for adults on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 6:00p.m. at the Library (200 Civic Center Way in Calabasas).  Participants will watch a classic film based on the novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser about a working-class young man who is entangled with two women; one who works in his wealthy uncle's factory and the other a beautiful socialite.  The film is 122 minutes and not rated, but appropriate for PG-13 audiences.  For more information, please call Karilyn Steward at (818) 225-7616.

The Friends of the Calabasas Library has purchased two memberships in Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) which allows the Library to loan patrons their two free general admission passes to the museum.  The free passes may be checked out for 2 days at a time from the Calabasas Library Circulation Desk and may be reserved up to one month in advance.
